The Joy of the Hunt

The Joy of the Hunt

There is something about thrifting that I absolutely love.

I never quite know what I’m going to find.

Sometimes I go looking for something specific. Other times, I simply wander through the aisles and see what catches my eye. And every now and then, I find something that makes me smile long after I’ve brought it home.

That’s how I found my Mickey Mouse toaster.

I wasn’t looking for anything unusual. I needed a toaster, and while browsing through a thrift store, I came across a little two-slice toaster with Mickey Mouse on the front. It wasn’t fancy or flashy. It was just a cute, older toaster, and the best part was that it worked.

So I bought it.

I think I paid about six dollars.

What I didn’t know was that I hadn’t simply bought a toaster.

I had bought a little piece of somebody else’s story.

The first time I used it, I put in two slices of bread and waited. When the toast popped up, the toaster started playing “It’s a Small World After All.”

Imagine my surprise! I was both amused and delighted.

And then I noticed something else. Each slice of toast had a different Mickey Mouse face toasted on it.

Now, every time I use that toaster, I think about the children who once stood waiting for their toast to pop up. I imagine little faces lighting up when Mickey appeared on their toast and that familiar song began to play.

I wonder where those children are now.

They’re probably grown.

I wonder if they remember this little toaster.

I wonder how many breakfasts it was part of before it found its way into my home.

And that’s one of the things I love about thrifting.

You never really know the story of the things you find.

A little wooden wagon I found became a home for three little ceramic ducks I named after my children. A dresser I bought came with notes tucked inside a drawer—notes belonging to a woman who had migrated from Italy and was learning English.

Someone else had owned these things before me.

Someone else had used them, enjoyed them, needed them, or perhaps simply held onto them for a while.

And then, somehow, they found their way to me.

I suppose that’s part of the magic of thrifting.

It’s not only about finding a bargain.

It’s about the hunt.

It’s the surprise of finding something you weren’t looking for. It’s discovering something useful that still has plenty of life left in it. It’s seeing beauty in something that someone else no longer needed.

And sometimes, it’s bringing home something that makes you smile for no reason other than you like it.

I’ve come to believe that we don’t need to own things simply because we can.

The things we bring into our homes should have a place in our lives. They can be useful. They can be beautiful. They can remind us of someone we love. They can make us laugh. They can bring back a memory—or create a new one.

Sometimes, they can simply make an ordinary Tuesday morning a little more delightful.

And perhaps that’s what I love most about my little thrift-store finds.

They’re not just things.

They’re part of the life I’m making.

And isn’t that what life is really about?

Finding the little things that bring us joy.

Making memories along the way.

And taking the time to notice them.

Because sometimes, you go looking for a toaster…

…and you come home with a story. 💚
